The Idol Maker (PHOTOS)
Bikau Pandit, 47, from Sarlahi district has been making a living sculpting clay idols for different Hindu festivals celebrated in Kathmandu Valley for 18 years.
His team including seven other sculptors is currently making clay idols for the festival of Dashain. He has already made eight sets of clay idols for different parts of Kathmandu Valley including Pashupati area, Chhetrapati, Boudha, Gwarko, Sanepa, Kupondole, Hanumansthan and Bagbazaar this Dashain.
A set of idols for Dashain consists of five different idols of Goddess Durga, Goddess Laxmi, Goddess Saraswoti, Lord Ganesh and Lord Kartik. Finishing a set of clay idols for Dashain takes 14 days for his team.
He charges Rs 35,000 to Rs 50,000 for a set of clay idols depending on the size of idols and the materials used to make them. He pays a daily wage of Rs 1,200 to the sculptors he employs.
